What is Reiki?
Reiki is a popular form of energy healing originating from Japan early in the 20th Century and is now practiced world wide. Reiki is understood as the life energy that flows through all things. It is believed that everyone’s energy should be strong and free-flowing. The Reiki practitioner understands that everyone has the ability to connect to this life energy to be balanced, healthy and whole. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words “Rei” meaning “higher power” and “Ki” meaning “life force energy”. When combined, these two words come to mean spiritually guided life force energy.
Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe non-religious method of improvement and healing. It does not require you to believe in any dogma or belief system to receive benefits. Reiki only requires practitioner and receiver of treatment participate believe in and practice universal peace and harmony.
A session is usually 60 to 90 minutes long. The Reiki Practitioner will meet a client to describe the session and discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing. For the actual session, the client will be seated comfortably in a chair or is most commonly in the supine (lying on the back) position. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and a client is always fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. A session can either be hands-on, where a Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this to the practitioner before they begin.
The session will then proceed with the Reiki Practitioner moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. The practitioner is channeling unseen, universal, life-force energy through their hands into your body. The sensation is generally a mild, glowing relaxation or radiance that sometimes fills the entire body, emotions, mind or spirit with beneficial feelings and effects. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.
